Walmart, which already plans a new Meridian store at Ten Mile and McMillan roads, now appears poised to build a second new store south of I-84.

The nation’s biggest retailer may be moving closer to building a new store at Overland and Stoddard roads, according to Meridian homeowners and the city’s deputy planning director. Stoddard Road is half a mile west of Meridian Road near the Roaring Springs Water Park.

A spokesman for Walmart did not immediately return a call Friday seeking comment. But Walmart held a neighborhood meeting this week that might set the stage for a request to modify the city’s existing zoning agreement for a parcel of land at OVerland and Stoddard.

The property is already zoned for a retailer like Walmart. But Walmart might try to change the conceptual plan in the original developer’s agreement with the city, said Pete Friedman, Meridian’s deputy planning director.

Earlier this week, Walmart also met with neighbors of the previously announced Walmart site at Ten Mile and McMillan. Friedman said one possible reason for that meeting could be that Walmart is contemplating subdividing the property, as happens when a large retailer has an anchor store with smaller stores around it.

Walmart has one store in Meridian at 4051 E. Fairview Ave., just east of Eagle Road.
