Backers of the nation’s first mountain bike specialty plate are encouraging trail enthusiasts of all kinds to buy the mountain bike plate and raise funds for preserving, protecting, and creating multi-use trails in Idaho.

Idahoans can purchase a mountain bike plate by visiting their local DMV office. It’s not necessary to wait until the annual vehicle registration expires. It costs Idaho residents $35 to purchase the mountain bike plate the first time and $25 for renewals. A portion of those fees will go toward trail projects statewide.

Baker is working with a volunteer promotions group to ensure that all of Idaho’s mountain bikers, cyclists, hikers, equestrians and others are aware of the new plate. They plan to distribute posters to bike and outdoors shops statewide, create promotional items like T-shirts and push the mountain bike plates on their web site, www.mtbid.org, facebook page, and other social media platforms to boost sales.

“People like the plate,” Baker said. “Based purely on the sales numbers, they are catching on pretty quickly. Also, the out-of-state response has been positive. I’ve been approached more than once by out of state groups asking how their state can have a mountain biking plate.
